Get into the summer spirit by celebrating Memorial Day with The JazzHappensBand at The Arts at Grace Greer Memorial jazz concert on Sunday, May 26 at 3 PM. The concert will take place at Grace and Holy Spirit Church, 13 Court Street in Cortland. An informal reception will take place after the concert. There is no charge for admission.

Band leader Jeff Dovi has no pre-set program. As he says, "Jazz isn’t planned. It just happens. I really think that Dixieland music is the happiest, toe-tapping and good-times music going, tunes that you can go home whistling!" Dixieland, blues, and quick stepping jazz numbers will be featured. The JazzHappensBand is a traditional Dixieland group operating out of Cortland. Formed in 2005, The JazzHappensBand was started because its members have a terrific time playing Dixieland jazz together. Local musicians in the concert will be Jeff Dovi on trumpet, Mike Poole on trombone, Nick Pauldine on clarinet, Ryan Zawel on tuba, Robbert van Renesse on banjo, Rick Huyge on piano, and David Alexander on drums.

Some of the band members are professional musicians, while others are employed in different fields. For example, Nick Pauldine teaches and performs professionally; while Jeff Dovi is a carpenter, and David Alexander is an attorney.

The JazzHappensBand performs throughout Central New York. They have entertained in a variety of locations, including Lime Hollow Nature Center for Environment and Culture, Cortland Youth Bureau's music series in Veterans' Park, the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, the Ithaca Fest in Ithaca, NY, the Homer Concert Series, the Cortland Wine and Arts Fest, and the first annual Fall Creek Porchfest in Ithaca, NY.

Audience members are invited to meet and talk with the performers after the concert. A special feature of the May 26 reception will be a cake raffle. Marianne Margrave will work with the winner to design, bake and decorate a delicious cake for an upcoming event. All proceeds will benefit The Arts at Grace.

The Arts at Grace is a community outreach effort of Grace and Holy Spirit Church supported by individuals, businesses, organizations and foundations from the greater Cortland community, including the Cortland Community Foundation and the Wilkins Foundation. The project also receives funds from the Decentralization Program, a re-grant program of the NY State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the NY State Legislature and administered by CNY Arts.
